The following explains how to install and activate Office 2016 on a Mac.

  • I am successfully activating office 2016, but I'm using the AD-Based activation now, as this is much easier (IMO) than KMS This was exactly the issue. I spun up a new PVS maintenance image for each vDisk, ran ospprearm and slmgr /rearm on each of them, then shut them down and promoted them to production.
  • Not on this release but when moving from old mac book to new one (got rid of old one so not running on 2) I had to do a Microsoft office license 2016 removal and then redid the license and it worked. Found the removal tool on the Microsoft support site.

Installation and activation

Microsoft Office appears to be experiencing activation issues on both Mac and PC today, according to several user reports on Twitter.MacRumors also received emails from multiple readers affected. This is the video of how to download, install and activate MS Office 2016 on MAC OS X. Just have a look on it and try this experiment on your MAC and if you. After you deploy Office for Mac, your users are prompted to activate Office the first time they use it. Make sure users are connected to the internet when they activate Office. On the Sign in to Activate Office screen, users should select Sign In, and then enter their email address and password. After they sign in, users may see an alert asking.

  1. Go to Office 2016 for Mac in IUware. (You'll need to log into IUware, even if you are already logged into CAS.)
  2. Click Get product key to see your assigned product key.
  3. On the Office setup page, enter your 25-character product key from IUware, and click Get Started.
  4. On the 'Welcome to Office Online' page:
    • If you already have a Microsoft account: At Office Online, enter your Microsoft account email address and password. Proceed to step 5.
    • If you don't have a Microsoft account: Create one, as follows:
      1. At the bottom of the page, click Sign up now and complete the required fields. UITS recommends creating an account with your primary IU email address (e.g., username@iu.edu) to ensure the least margin of error.
      2. You'll receive an email message requesting verification. Follow the instructions to finish creating the account.
        If the email message does not arrive within a few minutes, use the resend email option.
      3. Log into Office Online with your newly created Microsoft account. After selecting your country/region and language, click Continue. When prompted, enter a first and last name for the account.
  5. Verify that 'Microsoft Office Home & Business 2016 for Mac' shows on your account page.
  6. On the Microsoft page, click Install to download the installation file. Alternatively, download the installation file from IUware directly.
    The Microsoft account must show the 'Microsoft Office Home & Business 2016 for Mac' registration in step 5. If this is not completed, it will not be possible to activate the Office 2016 product after installation.

    If you downloaded the .dmg file from IUware, open the Finder, select Downloads, and then open Microsoft Office 2016 Installer.pkg. Click Continue.

  7. Once Office is installed, a new window will open. Click Get started >.
  8. You will be prompted to sign in to activate Office. Select Sign In, and then enter the email address and password for the account that you activated with the Office 2016 product key from IUware.
  9. Enter your Microsoft account email address and click Next.
  10. Choose Microsoft account.
  11. Finish the activation process by signing in with your Microsoft credentials.
  12. In the 'How would you like Office to look' interface, choose Colorful or Classic, and then click Continue >. You should then have full use of Office 2016.

Downloading Office for Mac 2016 from Office 365subscription seems an easy task. Unfortunately it doesn't always go as planned. It seems to be able to use it with corporate resources it needs to activated. While the activation of products that are bought directly at Microsoft with your standard account is trivial, with Office for Mac thru Office 365 corporate subscription requires additional setup on on-premise infrastructure including ADFS servers. As this wasn't our task and we simply got a license of brand new Office for Mac to play with, we didn't expect to have any problems with it. At least not on the activation process

After installation of Office 365 with corporate credentials, we've started Word 2016 and got a nice screen asking for activation of Office for Mac. Since we already have product bought as corporate client we choose Sign in and follow to next screen.

Unfortunately for us just after going thru entering our corporate email address the error shows up.

Similar errors as the one below have been described on other blogs but none was able to solve our issue.

Unable To Activate Office 2016 For Mac

After a lot of going back and forth with different settings, and nothing really helping finally we've shut down one of the ADFS servers and things started to get better, where we actually get asked for password.

Shutting down the working server and starting back up the other one gave us the same problem again. It seems the blame was totally on bad ADFS server that will need to be verified further before going into production. After entering password checking for license started
